Discuss Superman

There are some other movies from both DC and Marvel that are superb but NONE of them are EPIC.

Richard Donner's masterpiece stands alone.

Superman 1978 was the event of the century. Kids today won't get it because you really had to be alive back then. America waking up from its post-WW2 nostalgia and realizing a new insidious "Cold War" was threatening all life on Earth. We were desperately in need of a superhero... a total boyscout good guy with no hints of malicious, dark conflicts. Christopher Reeve was the hero every American kid could look up to.

None of this is really relevant today, with no clearcut definitions of "good" or "evil" anymore. The superheroes of today reflect that dark inner conflict. We'll never have another "superman" because we're too cynical to accept one. But back in '78... I agree this was frickin EPIC. Anyone who experienced it, you know what I'm talking about.

They're both more epic than Superman and leaves a giant stinker on Christopher Reeve.

I don't know about that. Infinity War was good. But its only one half of a two part story. They might screw up second half for all i know. And Black Panther just bored the F### out of me. I would not put that above Superman 1 or 2. And every Superman movie since Reeve stopped playing the role has been sh!t. Either Way without this movie. Infinity War and Black Panther probably wouldn't have been made in the first place. I mean how many Big Budget Superhero movies were made before 1978. Frankly i think this movie has a charm that most Modern day Comic Book movies just dont have.

You're an idiot. What part of Reeve's Superman films are crap are you guys not quite getting into your thick skulls.

Best way to prove your point is to not provide any proof or points, and call those who disagree with you idiots. Keep it up!

5 months? Seriously? You're an idiot for taking this long. If you can't reply within three weeks of any reply I post then fuckk off!

I revisited this board after rewatching the TV cut and thought I'd peruse the posts.

Apologies for interrupting the tennis match but I think what we're talking here is Soul.

Probably the Superhero films I'd rate closest to this would be Batman Returns and The Watchmen but I couldn't really put them on the same level due to that extra level of humanity Superman has. e.g. One of the first things Superman does is rescue a cat from a tree for a little kid. It's beautiful and it works but you're never going to see something like that in a million years in a MCU film (unless played out as some stupid side joke).

But then what "epic" means for different people might be open here - some might find a huge CGI battle featuring dozens of "heroes" as truly epic rather than something with true gravitas...

The only disagreement I have is that Superman II was epicker. He got his ass kicked, he laid Lois, and then he got all wuuuut at the climax and got all MAGA on the ABBA villains.

The Simple Truth is this. Without this movie, You wouldn't have a Black Panther or Infinity War to cream your pants over. Even Christopher Nolan said he used this movie as a blueprint when making Batman Begins. Hell Kevin Feige said "Richard Donner’s Superman I still think is the paradigm by which we all still should follow. It's all there." Respect your Elders, B1tches.

I agree about Black Panther being a bore, I was ready for it to end at the second waterfall fight. It's a B-level Marvel movie, not the world-changing masterpiece its cheerleaders try to promote it as. Infinity War was good, but I'm always going to be frustrated by how easily Doctor Strange could have defeated Thanos by himself and the conclusion could be a disappointment.

I didn't see Superman until after both of Tim Burton's Batman films, but I imagine it was similarly groundbreaking, and certainly meant a lot more than a big-budget superhero movie does now that we get four or five a year. The main problems I have with it is how long it takes for him to become Superman (the first half seems longer every time) and the lack of a fight in the movie. To it's credit though, I didn't have a problem with either of those things for years.

I saw Superman back in the day and liked it as a kid. I watched it maybe 5 months ago again, as an adult. I can appreciate it and respect it for being a pioneer for the super hero genre, but as an adult, I found it far less entertaining than movies like Batman (1989) and Spider-Man (2002). Reeve as Clark Kent and Superman seem so lame. I guess it might be that I was never a Superman fan, never cared to watch Smallville or any other origin films or the sequels (Superman II, III, etc.). I did enjoy Hackman as Lex Luthor strangely enough though.

At the time when I first saw it, I was probably like 6 or 7 years old, and it seemed cool. Watching it as a grown up, I noticed flaws and things that looked dumb and implausible even for super hero standards to me. I never feel that way watching the other superhero films I named.
