Billy Wilder is one of my favourite movie makers. He set standards across multiple genres (film noir, rom-com, drama). I've always been curious about a theme he apparently saw fit to explore through not one but two films. If I described a plot where a young lady, disappointed by unrequited love, attempts suicide, only to be rescued by the gentleman caller who secretly desires her and eventually wins her, we might be talking about The Apartment...or, just as easily, Sabrina. Yes, indeed, there are sufficient differences to refute that the two movies are "the same"...yet, having summarized the two movies thusly, it appears there is something there - I wonder what it was that Wilder was poking around at...?

I would say it is just a coincidence.
