Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal & Eiza González To Reunite With Guy Ritchie For His Next Movie; Black Bear International To Heat Up Cannes Market With The Action Pic

EXCLUSIVE: Amid simmering unease over the impact of the writers’ strike, the upcoming Cannes market is getting a shot in the arm with the arrival of Guy Ritchie’s next project, a big-budget untitled action movie which will star Henry Cavill (Man Of Steel), Oscar nominee Jake Gyllenhaal (Spider-Man: Far From Home) and Eiza González (Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw).

Plot details and title are being kept (largely) under wraps but we hear the story, which is said to be laced with Ritchie’s trademark humor, will revolve around two extraction specialists who must plan an escape path for a high-level female negotiator. This will be one of — if not the — biggest-budget projects at the market with Black Bear International launching world sales today.

The movie will see Ritchie re-teaming with Cavill, Gyllenhaal and Gonzalez after recent collaborations. The new project comes hot on the heels of April’s U.S. release of critically well-received action film The Covenant, starring Gyllenhaal, and Ritchie has only just wrapped starry WWII movie The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare with Cavill and González among cast. Cavill also teamed with Sherlock Holmes and Aladdin director Ritchie on The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

The new project is due to begin filming in Spain this summer. Ritchie wrote the original screenplay, and will also produce alongside partner Ivan Atkinson, and Black Bear International’s John Friedberg, who also produced Ritchie’s last two movies. Jill Silfen negotiated the deal on behalf of Black Bear International.

Ritchie said: “There’s something special that happens when you collaborate with the same partners regularly: you build a shorthand and a trust that lets everybody do their best work. Jake, Henry and Eiza are all astonishingly talented, committed, and engaging actors. This is going to be an action-packed movie that is both intellectually stimulating and physically exhilarating.”

HC, Jake Gyllenhaal & Eiza González. Good looks overload. astonished

Since everybody is a GR repeat, where’s Jason Statham? Not pretty enough? JS’ hotness is in his cool fighting skills. I guess nobody needs to get dropkicked in this.

But what if the strike continues? American actors and actresses can't work.

Jake’s filming. He and HC were photographed on set. Maybe GR got a waiver bc the strike was still on when this pic was taken.

GR must have permission to shoot his film. The cast can work, but they can’t promote other projects. HC didn’t post the Argylle trailer on his IG.

Both are looking good, because they don’t have dry grass on their face.

Lionsgate Takes Domestic on Guy Ritchie’s Next Movie Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Henry Cavill

Lionsgate has acquired domestic distribution rights to filmmaker Guy Ritchie’s untitled next film, which is currently in production in Spain. Principal photography wraps this week after the project secured an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA, with a cast that includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Henry Cavill, Ezia González, Fisher Stevens and Spanish actor Carlos Bardem (“The Son”).

Ritchie produced the new action film alongside Ivan Atkinson and Black Bear’s John Friedberg. Black Bear handled worldwide sales on the film.

“We are thrilled to once again be partnering with the entire Lionsgate team, whose passion and ambition for the film are very clear,” said Guy Ritchie in a statement. “We are excited to extend and build on our relationship with Joe, Adam, Nathan, and Charlotte to bring the film to audiences across the US.”

“We are very lucky to be working again with Guy, whose filmmaking transcends the action genre with its signature wit and irreverence. Combined with the unparalleled talents of Jake, Henry, and Eiza, this fast-paced, original action film promises to thrill, surprise, and delight,” added Charlotte Koh, EVP, Lionsgate Acquisitions and Co-Productions.

“We are delighted to be building on our relationship with Lionsgate, partnering with them on another incredible Guy Ritchie movie, following The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Having a powerhouse distributor in the US, combined with a wide array of the best in-class theatrical distributors from around the world, has allowed us to deliver a highly commercial film to the marketplace in what has been a very difficult period in our industry, and is a real testament to the power of independent distribution, which has never been more essential than this year,” added producer John Friedberg from Black Bear.

Henry Cavill Shows Up At Lionsgate CinemaCon: Teases ‘Highlander’; New Guy Ritchie 2025 Movie Gets Title

The star showed up at stuido’s 2024 CinemaCon sessions today. But there was more. The actor’s new movie with Jake Gyllenhaal and Eisa Gonzalez, and directed by Guy Ritchie for 2025 got a title — In the Grey.

Pic is billed as much of gunmen who –when billions are stolen, steal them back. The trailer kicks off with a kickass sting by Gyllenhaal, Cavill and Gonzalez in the skinney streets of Europe.

Of working with Gyllenhaal he said, “Jake is not only an incredible talent but what a wonderful man. I’m hoping we may see both of us on screen more often.”

Of Ritchie, the Superman actor added “He creates a wonderful environment on set” with plenty of “creative freedom”

Sometimes people say a film set is like family, “and to a degree is is, but not necessarily the family you want to keep hanging out with all the time. In Guy’s case it is. There is a short hand and a freedom of friendship.”

Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal will attempt to out-bulk each other in Guy Ritchie's In the Grey

What is In the Grey about?

Little is known about In the Grey bar a vague logline and a slice of footage released to the audience at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

Guy Ritchie and Henry Cavill both turned up to the industry event to announce the film, which is described as following "a group who operates in the middle of criminality and the law". So far, so Guy Ritchie. You could probably attach that to almost any movie in his back catalogue in some shape or form.

According to outlets that were in attendance, they were then shown the first cut of the trailer for the movie which involves Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza Gonzales (another Ritchie reunion) staking out a cafe while Cavill talks to them through an earpiece. Classically, all hell breaks loose next when the cafe erupts in a shootout and the pair have to fight back and escape. It's then made clear that the trio are on a mission to steal back some money that was taken by a gang of criminals. There are bad guys, glamorous locations and Gyllenhaal firing a rocket launcher – what more could you want?

Who is in the cast of In the Grey?

  • Henry Cavill
  • Eiza Gonsalez
  • Jake Gyllenhaal
  • Rosamund Pike, hot off her all-timer performance in Saltburn. Not much is known about Pike's character yet

When will In the Grey be released?

Not to make you wish away the rest of 2024 when it really only just got going, but In the Grey will hit cinemas on 17 January 2025.
