Remember when the Enterprise crewmen were stuck on the freezing planet on TEW and that no one thought to use a phaser ( or the ship's phases from afar) to zap a rock and make it hot like Chekov did in Spock's Brain?
Was it a hole? Had the show's writers invented the concept yet that zapping an object with a phaser could make it hotter? Yes they had! Yoeman Rand zapped a coffee container with a phaser in 'The Corbomite Maneuver' to heat coffee!

Evidently the phasers stopped working after a while, due to the cold. It doesn't seem likely that the charges were used up just by heating rocks.
And they couldn't beam down phasers, it would have had the same problem as the heaters, which duplicated and didn't work.

Didn't Yeoman Rand get attacked by the "evil" version of Captain Kirk in this episode?

Yes. But that is a different point than what I am making.

KIRK: How is it down there?
SULU: Oh, lovely, except that the frost is building up. We're using hand phasers to heat the rocks. One phaser quit on us, three still operating. Any possibility of getting us back aboard before the skiing season opens down here?

@Benton12 : But it's still an important question to ask. Especially when the encounter Rand had with Kirk was obliquely referred to a conversation Rand had with Captain Sulu's daughter in the TOS novel "The Captain's Daughter."

That is a different point period. And Star Trek books are not cannon to the series. I already talked about that in another posting. Will Decker not son of Matt Decker it is only in the books he ( Will) was not the only film the character in a sense appeared in.

Fan fiction for ST. Star Trek books. All not Canon to the original show and first ST movies.
