Discuss Star Trek

In TOS I always thought that Nurse Chapel was in love with Spock but that Spock did not have feelings for her. Full stop.

I saw a few clips that wonder2wonder kindly provided when season one of Strange New Worlds was on and today I found these two videos.

Are we supposed to believe that Spock actually fell in love with Nurse Chapel before he served on the Enterprise under Kirk.

I find very fetching the actress that plays nurse chapel. I love her platinum hair and dark eyebrows ... they look sweet together but that Spock and Chapel actually fell in love with each other doesn't make sense comparing them with the Spock/Chapel version in TOS.

Why couldn't the writers just follow the Spock/T'Pring relationship ..at least they were promised in TOS. (Amok Time)

And that's one of the points, of course. "Changing the birth years" is BS claptrap retcon nonsense.

It's not just the "Memory Alpha" website or whatever, either. Chekov announced his age in "Who Mourns For Adonais."

"Who Mourns for Adonais" happens on stardate 3468.1 (2267). Chekov told Kirk that he was 22 years old, so he was born in 2245.

Exactly. Which means if they try to drag in Chekov as an Ensign in 2259, or even at Starfleet Academy or something, he'll be 14.

Which is bad enough. But if they try to pretend he's older, that'll be just more BS clatrap retcon nonsense.

by wonder2wonder:

It doesn't matter who is cast as Christine, the romance between Spock and Christine would have always happened in (S)SNW. Spock would have then had three women: T'Pring, Christine and the second love interest who Jess Bush would play in (S)SNW

To me it just looks like the writers said “ To hell with canon” and went from there.

Anyways..

I think having Spock conflicted about having feelings for a new female character ( Bush even) would have offered more than enough soap drama..

then their story would ultimately end before Spock is under Kirk’s command.

From there the writers could have concentrated on Spock, T’Pring and Stonn and on the side Nurse Chapel pining in silence for Spock like she did in TOS

That way at least canon would be saved to some extent.

I have to say it again, Anson Mount is brilliant in the role of Pike, on the other hand, the actor they chose to impersonate our beloved Kirk, is a total car crash. Were the producers wearing blinkers when they picked him?

PS: Talking about bad choices.... Just recently I saw some reviews on Rings of Power: The actor that plays Gil-galad is exactly how I had imagined the elf king .. regal, he is perfect.

Instead, the one picked to play Elrond has a pinched face, ugly as hell, no long hair, huge elf ears that literally stick out like Dumbo's did.

.. in the movies, Hugo Weaving was glorious as Elrond.

Heck did they have to pick from the bottom of the barrel.. elves are supposed to be beautiful and have long silky hair.

Anyway the soap drama continues:

. Spock and Christine are in a relationship (yes they are sleeping together) and have decided not to tell anyone yet

. Christine breaks up with Spock

Is hard to understand where things really stand… but I watched the first clip now for the first time ( I was focused on writing my last post had not yet opened link)

To me it doesn’t mean they are sleeping together .. they are very close and she doesn’t want to say anything to their superiors until they are sure where they are headed as a couple.

The second clip .. she receives a job offer (?) and decides she wants that more than starting a relationship with Spock.

I don’t see why you think they have already been to bed..... also, it was T'Pring in TOS that betrayed Spock with Stonn and that's why they never got married.

The writers are going to change that important part too??

I haven't found any videoclips yet, but if you watch the whole episode, there is more context. At the end of S2E05 they were kissing in Spock's quarters and then the screen goes to black, implying that more happened. Usually you would then see in the next scene that they are in bed together or having breakfast, but that wasn't shown. So, of course they could have spent the whole night in his quarters just kissing. In the videoclip (S2E06) where they are playing chess, they are discussing their relationship and if it should be reported to Starfleet. Christine doesn't want to, comparing it to Schroödinger's cat. As long as no one knows, it didn't happen and that would explain why in (S)TOS it appears that there was nothing between them.

In the singing videoclip (S2E09) Christine has won a research fellowship and accepts it. She is going to leave the USS Enterprise and Spock. Probably, in season three she will meet Dr. Roger Korby who will become her fiancé. This breakup will probably lead to Spock permanently chosing logic over emotions and keeping a distance from nurse Chapel in (S)TOS, while she still has feelings for him.

"I recall that in (S)TOS nurse Chapel joined Starfleet when her fiancé Dr. Korby disappeared in 2261, hoping that she would find him again one day ("What Are Little Girls Made Of?"). She was assigned to the USS Enterprise under Captain James T. Kirk from 2266 to 2270. "

So to summarize, in (S)SNW it is assumed that Christine was already on the USS Enterprise under Captain Pike, had a relationship with Spock, then left it to work at a research lab, where she fell in love with Korby. Later, when he disappears, she returns to the USS Enterprise under Captain Kirk, where her meeting Spock again is a bit awkward.

Spock and T'Pring were seperated when he cheats on her with Christine. T'Pring cheats on Spock with Stonn. The questions are who did it first and who is to blame for Spock and T'Pring ultimately getting a divorce?

@sunshine62: I've only watched the first 8 episodes of season one of Strange New Worlds and haven't gotten around to watching season two yet (one of the great things about streaming services is I can watch the episodes of the shows I like anytime I want). I've been fascinated by Spock and T'Pring's relationship on SNW. Yet it also plants the seeds for T'Pring getting involved with Stonn. As for Chapel and Spock's relationship on SNW, from what I remember it did seem like they were falling for each other. I'm planning on watching the entire first season of SNW again before I watch season two, but this time I'll pay more attention to the relationships of the 4 people mentioned above.

@wonder2wonder:The relationship between Spock and Christine on Strange New Worlds is starting to creep me out. It just doesn't feel right. Perhaps it's the TOS Trekkie in me. I generally really like SNW (I think it's cool that Kirk's older brother Sam is a recurring cast member), but I don't like this plotline.

Could it be that you don't like a cheating Spock ?

Is SNW claiming that Spock and T'Pring were involved together before the events of "Amok Time?" Because I thought "Amok Time" made it pretty clear - at least by inference - that Spock and T'Pring hadn't seen each other since they were "joined" as children.

Spock and T'Pring have been dating and making out since the beginning of SNW. In the first episode, T'Pring asked him to marry her and he accepted. They were engaged then, and had the blessing of Chris (Pike). Everything was going well, until Spock and Christine meet, become friends, and then more, and kissed, and then... well, just another love triangle. Oh yes, there is also Stonn, who comforts T'Pring. Christine will leave Spock with a broken heart (human half), when she chooses to temporarily leave the USS Enterprise for three months, and then meet her future fiancé Roger Korby. Spock could next have a fling with Leila on a rebound. If you don't like all that romantic stuff, there are still the space adventures with singing Klingons, Gorns laying eggs in humans, battling the Romulans in an altered timeline, augmented species, section 31, a new war lurking, a mirror-universe, and many more strange new worlds and aliens to explore. As a bonus, every fan will get the chance to guess who will be the next member of (S)TOS to make a surprise appearance. Without doubt, season three will be even more exciting than the previous two seasons. wink wink

Oh, make no mistake, I'm never watching SNW, or Disc, or Pic... Most of what you list there is just BS claptrap retcon nonsense. The Gorn were unknown until "Arena" for example. Period. Full stop.

But TOS makes it VERY clear that Spock and T'Pring didn't meet and start "hanging out" when they were already adults. (Although it's been said in other contexts that Vulcans aren't considered "mature" until age 50 or perhaps 80.)

SPOCK: By our parents' arrangement. A ceremony while we were but seven years of age. Less than a marriage but more than a betrothal. One touches the other in order to feel each other's thoughts. In this way our minds were locked together, so that at the proper time, we would both be drawn to Koon-ut-kal-if-fee.

Spock and T'Pring were both born around 2230. So just Vulcan 'teenagers' in 2260 (SNW). Writers of NuTrek tend to think YA when depicting the characters and their stories.

Exactly, when they were seven they went through a ceremony that linked their minds, that's why when Spock experienced his first Pon Farr on the Enterprise T'Pring arrived soon after. As we find out she has no intention to bond with Spock because she loves Stonn.

Spock must mate or he will die, he ends up fighting for his right to mate with T'Pring. He wins and the blood fever is over. Spock lets T'Pring free from their childhood promise.

In SNW the writers have reinvented Spock's love life with T'Pring. T'Pring makes the first moves ( woke vibe here) and asks Spock to marry her and he accepts.. not because he is experiencing Pon Farr and he must mate or die. He has feelings for her and wants to have sex with her.

Then he meets Nurse Chapel and slowly feelings grow between them ( I have only seen clips wonder2wonder provided so I don't know the details ) and so we end up with a triangle of love..then at some point Stonn pops up to console T"Pring ( have no idea if they have done the deed )

In TOS , as far as I knew, nurse Chapel met Spock on the Enterprise and had a crush on him. She was never a rival when it came to T"Pring because Spock never showed any interest in her.

The writers made a shit job , they threw TOS cannon under the bus, simply because they wanted to create this love triangle and have Spock banging both chicks ...just to boost the rating.

Star Trek was not about the love lives of the crew but about exploring strange new worlds.

I haven't seen all of the Spock/Chapel romantic scenes on Strange New Worlds, but for some nutty reason them having a relationship doesn't seem to bother me anymore. Maybe it's because I always felt sorry for Chapel when she was crushing on Spock on TOS. As for T'Pring, I didn't like her on TOS and I wasn't that fond of her on SNW.
