Discuss The Beverly Hillbillies

This director (Penelope Spheeris) did not seem at all to know how to stage a joke. Critic Leonard Maltin mentioned this in review. Filmmaking effectively enough to create atmosphere is an art. This lady was photographing this more than she was directing it. Now, when it came to time to stage a joke if she did not know to do it and she didn't, she could have just given a quick closeup of the actor saying a joke or whatever!

Penelope Spheeris was never a comedy director.

Not very familiar with her other work am I. Still a quick closeup might have help the jokes come out funnier. Why in blazes did she not get a director also on the studio lot (one who knew how to direct comedy) and get that individual to help with the joke bits?
