I see no need for this, not for another decade or two at least. There are so many worthy fantasy novels or book series which could, given the right talent and budget, translate wonderfully to TV. Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series has huge potential; or, if they wanted to go dark (very dark) there's Stephen Donaldson's Thomas Covenant novels. But Lord of the Rings is a globally known brand, which I guess makes the project look like a surefire hit. However good it is, if this gets off the ground - which I doubt, as of now - it will be held up for intense scrutiny against Jackson's films (and, I guess, Game of Thrones - they seem to be aiming for that show's audience).

I was hugely disappointed that they stretched out The Hobbit into 3 films. Three! Preposterous IMO and an obvious cash grab. Look, if you do not have good source material then it is a heavy gamble because now the Hollywood writers have to (GASP!) actually WRITE something! I can see them going crazy like when it was announced they had run outta coffee in Airplane!.
OMG! Out of coffee!
