Discuss Saw

For a franchise that has a reputation for being gross and spending too much time on torture scenes, the first movie really isnt that bad.

Think about what we actually saw in this movie.
-A still shot of a man hanging in barbed wire. -A woman wearing a deadly device that she escapes from. -A couple second shot of Dr. Gordon sawing his leg, but nothing after that.

Everything is left up to the audience's imagination in this movie. We don't see the womans jaw getting ripped apart by the device, we imagine it. We dont see a man climbing through barbed wire and getting sliced up, we imagine it. We dont actually see the leg getting sawed, but we imagine it. This movie is good at making us see gruesome things without actually having to show all that much.

Yeah but the gore starts to get a lot worse as the series goes on. Everybody knows that the first one is the least gory of them all (and it might be the best of them all in general, too.)

Compared to the later films, it's surprising that the first one was originally rated NC-17 for violence and gore. It's the tamest of the series.

It also is one of the better movies in the franchise, so maybe there is a correlation here grinning Trap of the month gets boring at some point.

Interesting. Did they have to cut anything to get away from that NC-17 rating, or did they argue it down? I see no reason for why the first movie would have to get a rating like that.

This link outlines all the specific differences between the theatrical/r-rated and director's/NC-17 cut. Apparently the original cut has 24 extra seconds of gory and violent shots. But even with those extra shots, I'm surprised the movie didn't just receive an r rating from the start.
