I can't wait for this movie, but those who have read the book will understand immediately what I mean by the question in the title.
The book is loaded with references to 80's culture. Video games, movies, music etc. It will be a mammoth challenge in terms of getting through copyright, and just generally incorporating it all into the plot. Not to mention the scene where Parzival is immersed into already established 80's movies.
On a side note, how will they manage to hide the fact that two people are playing Aech without giving away the 'secret'?

It is clearly not set in the 80's and it would not work if the movie tried to adopt that change, which thankfully it hasn't.

I was wondering the same myself. My guess is a lot of those references wont be there. Otherwise we would have seen a lot more of them in the trailer. Speilberg and Amblin being involved would obviously help though. That's why we see the Delorean.

In the trailer there are references to much newer things than just the 80s. Case in point: Lara Croft ("DOB": 1996) is in the background of a chaotic fight scene.
So my guess is that they'll leave the 80s references in, but sprinkle a lot of other stuff to make it accessible to the new generations as well.

Plus you can bet it'll focus on properties already owned by Warner Brothers to cut down on royalty fees.

Well, it worked well... Although many things were changed in connection with the trials (obviously), they did what they could with the popculture references.
What bothered me in the book as well was the curious lack of Star Wars. I guess a large number of people would fly the Millennium Falcon and choose a Darth Vader avatar, but well... that would have costed them the whole budget of the movie, so it's understandable.
I really liked how they included a Mortal Kombat and an Alien reference into the same scene :D

They kept most of the 80's references in, but only when the references were tied to Halliday (and occasionally Wade/Parzival) which made sense in context. Other later references were put in for the other characters, which also made sense in context. Only one reference didn't make sense to me was the Gundam Robot as it was given a time limit that didn't make sense for the character, it was characteristic with Ultraman and even made the same beep noises that Ultraman makes when it's time limit is reached. I hear Ultraman was a big part of the book (I haven't read it myself) so I assume he was the intended inclusion in the movie, but was changed due to rights reasons.
