I haven't seen this movie yet... I grew up in the 80s but have zero sentimental attachment to it's pop culture...
I'll probably check it out in theatre this week, as Spielberg is usually entertaining when it comes to blockbuster type movies... Also, it's nice that this is non-comicbook...
Is this movie only for nostalgists?

The Gundam part was the one nostalgic reference that threw me off. Gundam doesn't have a time limit, also the limit alarm it made was the same as Ultraman's. So it made me think that it was supposed to be Ultraman he changed into but for some reason they couldn't get the rights to use Ultraman in the movie. I later found out that it WAS Ultraman in the books.

I didn't understand that disparaging remark from @Damienracer . I grew up in the 1980's and wasn't aware of Gundam either. I looked it up and found that it didn't even debut in the US until 1994. I have never been a fan of the art style of anime (or "Japanimation" as we referred to it back then), so it would have never caught my attention even if I had seen it on TV when I was a teenager. How can not being a fan of a specific aspect of nerd culture, such as anime, be a predictor of one's intelligence?

It's Damienracer. That's what he does.

Frankly any movie that makes the Atari 2600 essential to its plot. Is O.K. with me.
