With the ending to Shape of Water being a moralistic and unique ending of not having Elisa not having her form physically turn into the same race as the aqua Xeno humanoid man, i think it's how Avatar by James Cameron should had ended! don't you agree folks? i mean the ending to that movie was so damned racist in undertone as i think Jake should had let his avatar die and had him either genetically inject him with nanites to help him breath the air/atmosphere/digest the water/food on Pandora or have Eynwa or Eyena (whatever) to give him new lungs magically to help him breath/eat the stuff/drink water then Neyitiri would accept him for who he is and not how he looks which would had been a more moralistic ending on "how you look isn't important but by the content of your character" instead of physically changing his form to become the same race as Neyitiri at the end and i hated that ending. I don't like segreation endings to stories that have human X furry/Xeno /mutant romance stories like say Avatar as Avatar is like taking the 1967 comedy-drama classic with Sidney Poiter known as Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (If your not familiar with that movie! where it's the story of an African-American man who is dating a white woman she brings him home to her parents and the movie centers around them learning to accept that he is a valid person) and if you take that movie and have the black man magically turn into a white man so it can satisfy the notions of the parents as they wouldn't accept anything. I mean it would had been faster to fix Jake's legs and give him nanintes as with all the genetic technology they had, those avatars were a waste of resources.

She was one of them or a hybrid. The black lady basically said it when the first met the head of security .

i doubt that as she is fully human but the ending made her breath the water without physically changing her appearance to be the same race as her lover

Exposure to the creature had strange effects on people, like healing wounds or making hair grow. He was a magical creature. I just assumed all that fish monster sex began to turn her into a lady fish monster.

The entire movie is a masturbation fantasy, that's all.

I disagree, they were laying the ground work from very early on that she was part fish creature. She could control beads of water through the glass on the bus before she even met him. I never questioned for a second that the gills on her neck were gills. to my mind they were sewn shut when she was found orphaned by the river, whoever found her just assuming they were slashes. Also slashes like that on the side of your neck wouldn't cause you to have no speech, something else she shared with the amphibian creature.
