This movie checks all the usual Roland Emmerich checkboxes (world ending disaster, destroyed cities, divorced couple brought together, wife's new boyfriend dies, self sacrifice to beat the threat, etc) and the first 2/3's of this movie are pretty horrible. Bad acting, a lot of bad dialog, a lot of silly character quirks, etc.
But then... then they go full retard and it gets wonderful. In the 3rd act we get a backstory on the moon and it's so bonkers that it saves the whole movie for me. It's still a ridiculous movie and I will never watch it again, but I give them credit for swinging so wildly in the end.

I don't know seems like Roland Emmerich did what Roland Emmerich does best: a bloated bad movie. I mean he did do Stargate back in the day which was good and Independence day was a nice experience in the theaters, but it seems like it's all been downhill from there. All the stupidity is one thing, but what really got to me was all those pointless characters like Michael Pena, the daughters, the ex wife, the chinese heroic woman stuffed in there for no other reason than to appease the chinese market and financers. Most of these people have a few absolutely pointless minutes of screen time. Then there's the general who delivers every asinine line like he is giving the most grandiose speech ever given and his facial expression looks like he is suffering from chronic constipation and is taking the most painful dump ever. The plot is obviously silly, but they could have at least made it interesting with the alien angle, but no it's the old "Skynet has become self aware" trope.

Completely agree, especially the points with the Chinese "exchange student" and the General. Not only was the General such a crappy character, they hired an equally crappy actor to deliver such crappy lines.
Having said that, I agree with the OP - it was so bad it was kinda good. The alien storyline took me by surprise. While John Bradley was clearly out of place, there was something oddly watchable about his performance here.
