Discuss Dune

As everyone probably knows by now, Dune, which was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, won 6 (and also managed to avoid being slapped by Will Smith). Reactions and Opinions please.

Although it is the only film out of all films nominated that I have seen so it would be hard to judge? Technically, it was very good, so it deserves the ones it received.

Yes, Dune swept the technical categories, although I would agrue that Best Original Score is one of the more "mainstream" categories. Fun Fact: The gentleman who won the Best Original Score for his work on Dune, Kurt Zimmer, also did the score for the James Bond movie No Time To Die.

Best Director....snubbed hard. :/

I agree. That was disappointing.

That would be HANS Zimmer NOT Kurt!

Kurt Zimmer may have produced something more original to be fair 😂

Well, the important thing is that SOMEBODY with the last name of Zimmer won an Oscar for Best Original Score for Dune. Hooray! 🇨🇮🇺🇸🇺🇦🎉🎊🎇📀✳️😎🖖

Sad World we live in that such trash can win that easy ....

Fun Fact: In David Lynch's version of Dune, the movies soundtrack was composed by the American Rock Band Toto.

At least Dune got some popularity now due to the Oscars. I saw the original 1984 back in early 86. Boring yes, but the final battle and practical effects were good. The soundtrack for both by Toto and Zimmer are excellent.

The original Dune is pretty good. I think I was always put off largely due to the disgusting skin of the Baron (!) and Sting. But rewatching it before the new film came out, I was quite impressed by it.

Sure it's a bit slow but, much like Star Trek The Motion Picture, is easier to appreciate the film, despite its pacing, when you're a bit older.

The new film is pretty good, I wouldn't say better or worse, but it suffered with its own pacing issues, which seemed to be a result of trying to drag it out into two films. I think that was exacerbated by having seen the original film first though:-

I appreciate they're going to expand upon him becoming Muad'Dib and their terrorist attacks, etc. But that was pretty much covered by a montage (!) in the original film, so watching the new one you're left with a feeling of - why's this being dragged out when it's nearly the end of the story?

I guess we'll see once part 2 comes out but if it isn't a substantially exciting expansion of that part of the story, then I think the original film will become even more favourably looked upon.

Despite the success of the new one, I still prefer the old one. Sure, the weirding modules were Lynch's idea, but I learned to love them. The pacing is slow, but the climax is great. And all done with practical effects.

@71L1L : I remember that when the David Lynch version of Dune came out, all of the movie theaters would hand you a printed glossary explaining what a lot of terms mentioned in the novel meant as you walked into the autorium.

@SecretaryIMF I found that part out thru movie trivia. The biggest turn off to people was actually reading or a more complex storyline that involved thinking.

Dune 2021 STILL won 6 Oscars, Will Smith STILL didn't slap anyone over Dune over it, ane Rebecca Ferguson is STILL awesome!
