John's effect on Percy (spoilers)

John Coffey seems to have stored the tumor he extracted from the warden's wife, and breathes it into Percy's mouth, causing him to shoot Wild Bill, at which point Percy releases the 'bad energy' from his mouth and remains catatonic until his death (presumably).
What exactly did John do to Percy and why does it have the effect it has?

He saw him as an evil person like Billy boy and put him into a coma like state. The bad energy left but left a residue
