Discuss The Story of Soaps

I watched this new 2-hours t.v. special last night, enjoyed it and found it interesting. It covers from the beginning of soaps to present, therefore a lot of nostalgic territory.

I haven't personally watched any soaps beyond Dark Shadows (enjoyed in childhood, later [via reruns] during my teens, then also, within the last few years [regarding early seasons], via the DVDs sets for Collections 1-4) and - back during the Luke-Laura era - General Hospital.

Classic nighttime soaps is another matter - and this ABC/PEOPLE special does also go into those quite a bit. Back in the day I watched Dallas, Dynasty, etc. Those were during the era when "the Big Three" networks - ABC, CBS, and NBC - still very much ruled the roost on American t.v.

You know gen, I still do not understand the reasoning behind putting A TV SHOW in the movie section (even if it is a one-off, it isn't a movie).

I know. I understand the "why" - though it, nonetheless, feels like in the t.v. category is where a t.v. production should properly be added. Even something like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (which was produced for television) or any 10-20 mins. featurette extra on a DVD (something produced especially for inclusion on a DVD) is under the Movies category on TMDb.

Basically, on TMDb, if something didn't originally air in at least two episodes, it has to be classified as a movie due to how the site is set up.

I missed it. Drats!

I bet ABC will re-air it within a couple months. When they do, I enjoyed it so much the first time around that I'll gladly watch it again. The two hours flew by.

I like that not only daytime soaps, but also classic primetime soaps, as well as "reality" series (for example MTV's The Real World), were significantly covered.

Old time radio soaps as well? 😀 🎙️📻

It touches on radio soaps during the early portion of the documentary, during coverage of the transition from radio soaps to the then-new medium of television.
