Discussão Tempo de Glória

Saved this from IMDb before it was destroyed.....My 13 yr old son and I watched recently and he questioned the two versions of US flags seen in the movie. He did some research and found the following - First is one where the small state stars are in the shape of a larger star on the blue field (33 star flag). The other is where the small state stars are in two concentric circle (34 star flag). Those flags are accurate for the time period of the movie, and well done to the movie for getting this right. Just another reason why I love this movie so much -- must have watched it 50+ times. The score, acting, filming, etc - just top notch. Broderick as Shaw was outstanding. And as a military history buff and war movie fanatic, I say without hesitation the whole assault on Ft Wagner scene - from the time Shaw puts his uniform on in the tent, through his emotional walk through the soldiers (We...we...are ready Colonel), through the prep scenes on the beach (The 54th is ready sir), to the final assault, are the FINEST military battle scenes EVER put on film. I put these scenes up against ANY OTHER MOVIE.

Thanks for posting about the flags. Very interesting. Glory is one of my favorite movies. I watch it often especially when I need to be inspired. The part where Shaw stands on the beach watching the seagulls gets me every time -- and then the walk-though as you mentioned. Wonderful, courageous stuff.

Denzel was outstanding in this film! I absolutely love the scene where the black soldiers psych themselves up the night before the battle.

Oh Yes! Who can ever forget the scene when Denzel is captured for leaving the camp and whipped. Just thinking about that scene sends chills down my spine.

Denzel won an Oscar and this scene seals it for me personally. When he is humbled when asked to lead a verse of the prayer.

The acting in this movie is superb.

Some people might take issue with this comment... but I just feel, for a film directed by a white cat, Glory really does a GREAT job of capturing nuances of the black experience... I mean the conflict between the younger brother Pvt. Trip (Denzel) and the older one Maj. John (Morgan Freeman), that was great. Also, the way that Trip got after the Andre Braugher character (Searles), calling him "snowflake" and whatnot. I could very much feel the friction between these 3 black men.

At the very end, when you see Trip's body being, I think, rolled into a mass grave right next to Shaw's (Matthew Broderick), I feel like they're trying to make some liberal comment about how they were all the same, something like that... one could take issue with that assertion or not... anyway, at the end of the day Glory does a great job of depicting little conflicts between men of the same "races" and of different "races"....
