I just woke to this very sad news. He was marvellous in Frasier - it will be hard to watch episodes of my favourite show now that he is no longer around.

Also memorable in plenty of movies - I especially love his performance in Say Anything...

My favorite sitcom also. I have all 11 seasons on DVD and watch an episode or two every night. When I watch it tonight I am sure it will be sad. May he RIP. Here he is in his beloved chair on Frasier.

I feel the same about The Golden Girls. It's so hard to watch because nearly everyone, including guest stars, have since passed.

It was so sad to hear of John's passing. For some reason I was thinking he was older than 77.

Amazing actor. RIP.

He tended to play characters older than his actual age. Based on his age during the show's run Martin Crane would be well into his eighties by now.

That does seem to be true, although I saw him about 10 years ago playing a drag queen (on an episode of E.R., I think) and he looked to be well up in his 70s then. I thought he was at least 80, but maybe older.
