Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal & Eiza González To Reunite With Guy Ritchie For His Next Movie; Black Bear International To Heat Up Cannes Market With The Action Pic

EXCLUSIVE: Amid simmering unease over the impact of the writers’ strike, the upcoming Cannes market is getting a shot in the arm with the arrival of Guy Ritchie’s next project, a big-budget untitled action movie which will star Henry Cavill (Man Of Steel), Oscar nominee Jake Gyllenhaal (Spider-Man: Far From Home) and Eiza González (Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw).

Plot details and title are being kept (largely) under wraps but we hear the story, which is said to be laced with Ritchie’s trademark humor, will revolve around two extraction specialists who must plan an escape path for a high-level female negotiator. This will be one of — if not the — biggest-budget projects at the market with Black Bear International launching world sales today.

The movie will see Ritchie re-teaming with Cavill, Gyllenhaal and Gonzalez after recent collaborations. The new project comes hot on the heels of April’s U.S. release of critically well-received action film The Covenant, starring Gyllenhaal, and Ritchie has only just wrapped starry WWII movie The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare with Cavill and González among cast. Cavill also teamed with Sherlock Holmes and Aladdin director Ritchie on The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

The new project is due to begin filming in Spain this summer. Ritchie wrote the original screenplay, and will also produce alongside partner Ivan Atkinson, and Black Bear International’s John Friedberg, who also produced Ritchie’s last two movies. Jill Silfen negotiated the deal on behalf of Black Bear International.

Ritchie said: “There’s something special that happens when you collaborate with the same partners regularly: you build a shorthand and a trust that lets everybody do their best work. Jake, Henry and Eiza are all astonishingly talented, committed, and engaging actors. This is going to be an action-packed movie that is both intellectually stimulating and physically exhilarating.”

HC, Jake Gyllenhaal & Eiza González. Good looks overload. astonished

Since everybody is a GR repeat, where’s Jason Statham? Not pretty enough? JS’ hotness is in his cool fighting skills. I guess nobody needs to get dropkicked in this.

Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal will attempt to out-bulk each other in Guy Ritchie's In the Grey

According to outlets that were in attendance, they were then shown the first cut of the trailer for the movie which involves Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza Gonzales (another Ritchie reunion) staking out a cafe while Cavill talks to them through an earpiece. Classically, all hell breaks loose next when the cafe erupts in a shootout and the pair have to fight back and escape. It's then made clear that the trio are on a mission to steal back some money that was taken by a gang of criminals. There are bad guys, glamorous locations and Gyllenhaal firing a rocket launcher – what more could you want?

Sounds too familiar. I want HC in a horror like Omen. He should play an evil priest or the Antichrist. The older version of Damien Thorn.

OMG, HC as the Antichrist. Well, the devil never looked better. I'll join that cult or religion. It can't be much worse than the Catholic religion. rofl

Eiza González Talks ‘Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,’ ‘3 Body Problem’ Season 2 and Her Real-Life ‘Ambulance’ Sequel

The 2022 actioner is Michael Bay’s best-reviewed film since 1996’s The Rock, and it includes a beloved scene where Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II sing along to Christopher Cross’ “Sailing” while sharing AirPods. And what puts the scene over the top is González’s character’s bewilderment in response to these two adoptive, bank-robbing brothers. Well, as fate would have it, “Sailing” came on the radio while González, Gyllenhaal and Cavill shared a car on the Tenerife-based set of In the Grey.

I’m still enamored with Michael Bay’s Ambulance, and you and Jake Gyllenhaal reunited in your next Guy Ritchie movie, In the Grey. Did the crew ever reference or play “Sailing” around the two of you?

It is absolutely bonkers that you just asked that. Henry [Cavill], Jake and I were in a car in Tenerife, and [Christopher Cross’] “Sailing” was playing on the radio. And I said to Jake, “How funny is it that this song is playing right now?” And he was like, “That is mental.” And Henry was like, “What are you guys talking about?” And we were like, “Oh, nothing.” (Laughs.) But it totally happened. By the way, it’s not a song that plays too often on the radio, so it was very strange.

I not only reconnected with Henry and Jake on In the Grey, but also with Rosamund Pike, who I’ve been dying to work with again. So being on that set felt like Groundhog Day. I called Rosamund and asked, “Can you please do this movie with me? I really miss you.” And because she’s just so cool, she was like, “I’m down. I have some days off. Should I come?” So I connected her with Guy, and I basically cast Rosamund Pike in In the Grey.
