Discuss Diamonds Are Forever

When I first saw this movie as a kid back in 1971 (which in retrospect I shouldn't have because I was too young due to the content), I was so happy that Sean Connery had returned to play James Bond. I thought it was terrific! Nowadays, I say to myself, "what were you thinking, young Maria? It was horrible!"

The problem isn't Connery, the problem is the atrocious screenplay by Tom Mankowitz, who also wrote Live and Let Die and The Man With the Golden Arm, three of the worst Bond film's. In fact, the screenplay is so bad that I don't care what Richard Dinner says, there is just no way that Mankowitz's rewrites of the screenplay for "Superman: The Movie" could possibly have been substantial, it is too good , although it is clear he must have been the one who added all the awkward jokey humor that everyone hates.

So you're a fan of the annoying redneck cop, and idiocy like Bond accidentally swallowing a bullet or the bad guy popping like a balloon? You think those things make for a good Bond film?

There is one part of Diamonds Are Forever that I did like - when Bond was getting his ass kicked by Thumber and Bambi.

I wholeheartedly disagree. I don't think any of his Bond films are exceptional cinema, but "You Only Live Twice" was terrible. It was so clear to see Connery didn't want to do it. And when they dressed him up as an Asian... Godawful.

It’s really disappointing coming after that sad ending from OHMSS. It’s clear that Connery just doesn’t care anymore at this point, he’s out of shape and looks older than he was at the time. Also, the story is nonsensical, Blofeld’s reduced to a cartoony villain, Tiffany Case is done dirty, and the opening is a unsatisfying conclusion to Bond’s revenge story. This should’ve been directed by Peter Hunt with Lazenby in the role and the movie should’ve been about Bond going on a personal mission driven by his vendetta, basically like Licence to Kill.
