Minden valamire való autós tudja: a járgánynak lelke van. Persze nem mindegy, hogy az a lélek milyen. Mert legtöbben nyilván kedvesnek, segítőkésznek, ragaszkodónak szeretnék tudni autójukat - illetve a benne lakozó személyiséget. De mi van, ha ez az autó gonosz lélek? Ha ragaszkodó ugyan, de ragaszkodása már nem a szeretet megnyilvánulása, hanem félelmetes szélsőségekbe hajló birtoklási vágy?
A Lisbon család egy michigani kisvárosban él. A családfő - egy ügyefogyott matematikatanár- nem igazán foglalkozik öt lánya nevelésével. Nem úgy a vallásos és zsarnoki anya, aki tiltások és parancsok segítségével irányítja a lányok életét. Monoton, rendezett életüket szörnyű tragédia rázza meg: a legfiatalabb lány, a tizenhárom éves Cecil öngyilkos lesz. Senki sem ismeri a lány kétségbeesett tettének indokát. A Lisbon család érzelmeit elfojtva megpróbál visszazökkenni a mindennapi élet medrébe, ám idővel kiderül, hogy ez lehetetlen.

One evening, Paula receives a phone call which assures her that her son, Alec, is actually alive and in New York. This brings up painful memories from the past for everyone involved, including Ben and Jake, who force their father to talk about the Holocaust. Paula rushes to New York only to find that it was a mistake - Alec was never found. She falls into a dramatic depression, as the family confronts their fears and tries to stay together.

As such, he tries – unsuccessfully – to prevent Ariane from coming under Catherine’s bad influence. Ariane takes up smoking, starts telling lies, and begins to explore her sexuality. While Catherine’s mother attempts to seduce the handsome, and single, David, he sets a trap for Catherine. For Catherine, living dangerously is no longer a game, and she has to summon all her strengths in order to survive.
