Nei primi anni dell'Ottocento, in Tasmania, una giovane detenuta irlandese è in cerca di vendetta per l'omicidio della sua famiglia. Prendendo come guida un aborigeno, attraverserà le zone interne e otterrà molto più di ciò che si aspettasse.

Nella calda e polverosa Australia del 1880, tre fratelli, membri di una banda di fuorilegge, dettano legge nei selvaggi territori degli aborigeni. I tre vengono incriminati per lo stupro e l'uccisione di una giovane donna incinta, ma solo due di loro vengono catturati, Charles e il fratello minore Mike, affetto da ritardo mentale. Il capitano Stanley tiene in ostaggio Mike e propone a Charles una proposta, se lui gli porterà il fratello Arthur, il vero leader della gang e responsabile degli ultimi fatti di sangue, terrà in vita il fratello minore.

Nel 1931 l'Australia ha due problemi principali. Da una parte l'invadenza dei conigli, per difendersi dai quali è stata costruita una recinzione che taglia l'intero continente. Dall'altra l'esistenza degli aborigeni, che si pensa di "addomesticare" strappando i più giovani alle famiglie di appartenenza per deportarli in appositi "campi" di rieducazione dove dovranno imparare ad obbedire ai bianchi. Tra le vittime anche Molly, Gracie e Daisy Craig, tre bambine che decidono di fuggire percorrendo le 1.500 miglia necessarie per tornare a casa. Nonostante l'accanimento del funzionario predisposto all'attuazione del programma e gli sforzi della guida indigena incaricata di ritrovarle, due su tre ce la faranno.

Il maltempo peggiora e David si rende conto che qualcosa di terribile e di magico sta per accadere.
