Frank Galvin (Newman) è un avvocato alcolizzato che ha dovuto abbandonare la carriera perché coinvolto in un caso di corruzione. Oggi s'è ridotto a correre dietro alle cause di risarcimento relative agli incidenti automobilistici. Finché un vecchio collega che gli affida un caso complesso: la difesa di una donna che, operata in un ospedale cattolico, per un errore degli anestesisti ha perso vista e parola e ormai è in coma da quattro anni. Newman interpreta il ruolo di Galvin con grande carica e drammaticità.

Il film racconta la storia di quasi quarantotto ore della vita del dottor Bock, il primario di medicina in una grande ospedale di Manhattan dove vi è una sezione dedicata all'apprendimento medico. Bock è nel pieno di una crisi di mezz'età, che lo sta portando sull'orlo del suicidio. Una serie di morti bizzarre che accadono nell'ospedale tra lo staff medico lo distolgono dal tentativo di far apparire il suicidio un incidente (a scopo assicurativo).

Anton Phibes, un celebre organista dato per morto in un incidente stradale, in cui è rimasto soltanto orribilmente sfigurato, è convinto che la sua bella moglie Victoria Regina, perita durante un'operazione chirurgica, sia stata vittima dell'incapacità dei medici. When the body turns up later and the murderer, Dr. Highley, thinks that DeMaio can identify him, her life is put in jeopardy. Originally made for television and adapted from a novel by Mary Higgins Clark, the interesting twist to this thriller is that several cast members of the daytime soap opera "Guiding Light" play those same roles here.

Adding insult to injury

Four intersex people tell their stories with eloquence and candour. Roz Mortimer's film questions how medicine and society have treated intersex people, and breaks the codes of silence and secrecy that have surrounded their lives.

‘Voices from the Shadows’ shows the brave and sometimes heartrending stories of five ME patients and their carers, along with input from Dr Nigel Speight, Prof Leonard Jason and Prof Malcolm Hooper. These were filmed and edited between 2009 and 2011, by the brother and mother of an ME patient in the UK. It shows the devastating consequences that occur when patients are disbelieved and the illness is misunderstood. Severe and lasting relapse occurs when patients are given inappropriate psychological or behavioural management: management that ignores the severe amplification of symptoms that can be caused by increased physical or mental activity or exposure to stimuli, and by further infections. A belief in behavioural and psychological causes, particularly when ME becomes very severe and chronic, following mismanagement, is still taught to medical students and healthcare professionals in the UK. As a consequence, situations similar to those shown in the film continue to occur.
