故事的主人公就是一个中产阶级家庭的爸爸、妈妈和女儿。他们的收入显然已经不仅仅是满足温饱，家庭成员之间的关系也很融洽，因此表面上看一家人很幸福。他们的生活很有规律。早上妈妈叫女儿起床，然后洗脸刷牙吃早饭，和大多数人一样。车库的门一天打开两次，爸爸早上开车出门，晚上下班把车开回家。爸爸、妈妈以及很多城市人都早已习惯这样重复着度过每一天。可是女儿还小，她的生活应该是多姿多彩、充满意外的，不仅在学校里，而且在家庭里。中产阶级的死板令她觉得自己被忽视，她不能忍受，所以有一天她突然假装失明，以引起大家的注意...

Through the use of historical re-enactment, Chandler's Mill explores the issues of child labour, worker's rights and union organizing in 19th-century Canada.
