Immer wieder wird Baron Franz von Naydek mit dem Fürsten Woronzeff verwechselt, da sich beide täuschend ähnlich sehen. Eines Tages kommt Woronzeff diese Ähnlichkeit sehr gelegen. Da er schwer krank und den erbschleicherischen Intrigen seiner Verwandten nicht mehr gewachsen ist, bittet Woronzeff seinen Freund Naydek, für eine Weile die Fürstenrolle zu übernehmen. Naydek willigt ein, alles scheint glatt zu laufen. Woronzeffs Ex-Frau Diane jedoch durchschaut das Spiel, schweigt aber, da sie Naydek liebt. Der wiederum verliebt sich in Nadja, die Tochter Woronzeffs, die lange als verschollen galt und nun wieder auftaucht. Die Verwandten des Fürsten fürchten um ihr Erbe, deshalb weigern sie sich, Nadja anzuerkennen. Inzwischen ist Woronzeff gestorben. Nun ist Naydek gezwungen, die Rolle auf unbestimmte Zeit weiterzuspielen.

Baron Franz von Naydek is constantly being mistaken for Prince Woronzeff, since both look identical. One day, Woronzeff decides that this similarity might come in handy. Since he is very ill and can no longer deal with the intrigues of his relatives, he begs his friend Naydek to play the role of prince for a while. Naydek agrees and everything seems to be going splendidly. Woronzeff’s ex-nag Diane sees through the game, however, but says nothing, since she’s fallen for Naydek. He, in turn, has the hots for Nadja, Woronzeff’s daughter, long thought lost and who has now reappeared. The prince’s relatives fear for their inheritance and so refuse to acknowledge Nadja’s existence. In the interim, Woronzeff dies. Now Naydek is obliged to play the role for a much longer time than he bargained for.
