If space travel is impossible without spice...

...then how the hell did the get to Arrakis to get the spice? Chicken or egg scenario, if you will.

They got there the good old way, slow and steady. Over centuries of traveling from plant to planet and finally finding Arrakis.

I suppose that is the only viable explanation. Just the way they word it in the film they make it seem that space travel is not possible without the spice.

No, its possible. Just takes a very long long time. The story is based so far into the future that I dont think we can even relate to any of the tech and also some of the human 'super' people in the story.
