How do you think wheelman compares to other driving movies?
Both in-car movies like Duel/Joy Ride, The Driver and Locke, as well as driver centric movies like Baby Driver and Drive...
I was expecting it to just be an all out chase movie, but it seemed to build and hold tension well through calls and dialogue... Some scenes reminded me a lot more of Locke than they did any of the more action oriented driver movies...
I think it was a pretty solid effort... Entertaining for the most part which isnkey in these movies...

Agreed, it was intense and convincing -- it unexpectedly managed to keep me interested all the way through, which is rare with movies these days, and (in my case) even rarer with "driving movies". Haven't seen all the ones you listed; I think I saw 'Joy Ride' when it came out 16 years ago but don't remember it, 'Drive' was mostly slow and unengaging IMO and 'Baby Driver' struck me as an extremely overrated hype.
Oh, and I watched half an hour of the first 'The Fast and the Furious' back when it first came out on video, and swore never to watch anything of that sort again. (I would probably have bet a large sum against even one sequel ever being made; not in my wildest nightmares would I have suspected a hugely successful franchise to come of it... Still confuses me. )

Have you seen Locke? It's a more of a drama, almost like a radio play, but I think it must have influenced Wheelman...

Actually yes, I forgot to say -- I think 'Locke' is absolutely brilliant, but I'm not sure I'd throw it in with the other ones. I mean, as you say it's almost like a radio play, and I see some similarities with 'Wheelman', but I don't think of it as a 'driving' movie as such. I mean a car is the frame of it, but unless I remember it incorrectly, you could just as well put Locke on a train or a ferry or something and the story would be fairly similar, no? Anyway, it's very good.

I really liked it. Like op said it really held the tension. And, as dark as it was in a way I expected it to really go to hell for the guy, but he actually made it. That was kind of fresh because it usually goes sideways one way or the other these days. I want a happy finish once in a while. Last minute I was sure something bad was gonna happen...

I was expecting this to be something like ‘Getaway’ (which I liked) but was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be different

Of the two getaway driver movies I've seen the year (the other being Baby Driver of course) I thought this was the better one. They're both great though.

Unusual as it is for me to disagree with Gimly, I enjoyed Baby Driver more. This was a smart and tight little thriller, and much better than I expected it would be, but for entertainment value and style, Baby Driver nailed it. Locke was ok, it was clever and well put together, but I didn't find it particularly affecting or exciting.
