I found this lack of AMPAS support disturbing: SNUB: “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” (Best Documentary Feature) — Morgan Neville’s sentimental look back at the life and career of Fred Rogers tugged on the heartstrings of many last summer, and it was thought to be a shoo-in for this year’s Oscars. Shockingly, it was left off the final nomination list, with “Of Fathers and Sons” joining category favorites “RBG” and “Free Solo” on the list instead.

I was unaware of the Oscar snub, but to be honest, I am far more impressed with the life and legacy of Fred Rodgers than any awards a film about him might receive. To me it was the subject that was so enthralling.

By the time "Mr. Rogers" arrived on PBS, I was a know-it-all-into-myself high school teen. Fred Rogers' approach to his audience on Serious Things made me stop and take notice when he dealt with Death. Starting of with a "sunk to the bottom of the tank" Guppy, he went through all the "is it still alive/can it be brought back to life?" steps. When it was clear that said aquarium fish was dead, he didn't flush it down the toilet or feed it to the cat; it got a burial worthy of a beloved family member. That short segment stays in my mind for it's simplicity, care, and reverence for all things living and formerly living.

...and of course Tom Hanks plays Fred Rogers in an upcoming movie. He is Hollywood's flavour of the month indeed.

I have to admit, as a non-American, I had never heard of Mr Rogers or his show until this documentary was released. It seems he is a truly beloved figure known and loved by all except me!
