This is a very funny Silent, and fantastic Beatrice Lillie is a real joy and treasure in it. Some of her comedy acting is decidedly very broad (entirely intentionally), though all the rest of the time she gives a naturalistic performance, displaying beautiful sensitivity. The combination wonderfully works.
The film's authentic period flavour holds real appeal and interest, seeing how live theatre audiences of the mid 1920s responded to stage performances (or to waiting for a performance to begin), the on-the-road traveling performers' lifestyle and day-to-day experience, etc.
This is a comedy with abundant charm and real heart. It's fun, briskly paced, thoroughly entertaining, and in a number of places absolutely hilarious.
Incidentally, for anyone who doesn't already know, "vampire" (a.k.a. "vamp") back then was a popular term for a femme fatale type. It's a term that comes up frequently throughout Exit Smiling.
