Apple Original Films is making more moves in the theatrical space. The streaming service is teaming with Universal to give the Henry Cavill spy thriller Argylle a Feb. 2, 2024, exclusive global release.

“Apple believes in cinema and I believe in cinema,” Vaughn said at the time. “So we’re discussing how to give it the right cinematic release, not necessarily the normal cinematic release. It’d be a cinematic release that is right for Argylle, and Argylle is quite specific and different. So weirdly, it lends itself to a whole new way of being released.”

Universal made $1B in less than three years with a different release strategy.

In 2020, at the height of the pandemic, Universal Pictures and its art-house sibling, Focus Features, set off alarm bells in Hollywood by ending the long-held practice of giving theaters an exclusive window of about 90 days to play new movies. Instead, their movies, which have since included “Jurassic World: Dominion,” “Belfast,” “Cocaine Bear” and “M3gan,” would become available for digital rental or purchase — at a higher price — after as little as 17 days.

The executive producers are Adam Fishbach, Zygi Kamasa, Carlos Peres and Claudia Vaughn.

Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle Trailer Breakdown: Henry Cavill’s Secret Agent, Spy Tropes, And A Mysterious Cat

“I’m guilty of creating and following tropes of great-looking guys in tailored suits, but so Argylle doesn’t get confused with Kingsman, I put him in Nehru jackets all the time, and gave him a flat-top,” says Vaughn of that distinctive get-up. “Argylle lives in the fun and glamorous world of spies that we know.”

“There’s about eleven twists in the movie!” laughs Vaughn.

“One of the themes of this movie is, there’s a spy world people love and make money out of,” says Vaughn, “and then there’s the real spy world that people don’t really know about.”

“Something happens with her [Elly Conway], author of all Argylle’s pain across a series of best-selling books] which is that she has a really crazy imagination,” explains Vaughn. “And she wrote an idea which for me was a purely fun, fictional idea, but it basically shone a spotlight on some cockroach. And then she gets a dose of reality.”

“I just like the challenge of launching new intellectual property (IP),” Vaughn said. “I think it’s harder, but it’s more fun. Argylle, as I said, we’ve got the book coming out…and we have an Argylle 2 planned. So, there is a universe. What we’re trying to do…[What] Marvel [is to] superheroes, we want to be to spies. We’ve got the Kingsman on the right. Argylle is on the left. We’ve got an idea for something in the middle, as well. We’ve got these competing franchises in a galaxy that one day might meet.”

Earlier in the podcast, Vaughn explained that an Argylle book, which the movie is based on and is written by first-time novelist Elly Conway, is being published in January 2024. Elly Conway is also the name of the character Bryce Dallas Howard is playing in Vaughn’s upcoming movie, giving the spy thriller “a lot of meta qualities.”

“[The book] is being written,” Vaughn — who also directed 2014’s Kingsman: The Secret Service, 2017’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and 2021’s The King’s Man — said. “I’ve read it.”

Argylle hopes to be a trilogy. The HC/Jake film and Highlander hope to be a trilogy too. When will HC have time to do WH40K? I think the shooting of that will take like six moths. HC should have time to relax and have fun too. Life shouldn’t be too much work, work, work.
