Henry Cavill teases his 'new way' of doing fight scenes in Argylle — and his new haircut

The star of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Mission: Impossible — Fallout plays the title character in Argylle, the star-studded new spy film from Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman: The Secret Service). The only problem is, Agent Argylle isn’t exactly real. He’s a fictional character created by author Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard) as the protagonist of her successful series of spy novels. When actual spies start targeting Elly for the confidential information apparently hidden in her books, she imagines her hero Argylle saving her — even though her actual protector is the decidedly shabbier Aiden Wilde (Sam Rockwell).

The film’s first bravura action sequence is a long fight aboard a train. As Wilde fights off Elly’s attackers, she keeps seeing Argylle in his place. That meant that every beat of the scene had to be filmed with both Cavill and Rockwell, so that Vaughn and the film editors could coherently intercut the footage. It wasn’t an easy task to pull off!

“Sam and I were watching each other and just trying to make sure that we had a similarity of movements,” Cavill tells EW in his first interview about the film. “Certain movements worked better for him, so I would mimic those, and then different movements in other places worked better for me, so he would copy those. Fight scenes are tricky and complex, especially in a cramped space like that with lots of hard edges.”

Though this innovative approach meant that both Cavill and Rockwell had to work harder than if they had just been doing the scene by themselves, they also got to share the burden.

“It’s quite nice doing these things when you have someone doing the exact same work as you,” Cavill said. “So I do my bit, or Sam does his thing, and the other one gets to rest. The camera moves on, and we get to have a nice break. It was definitely a new way of doing things, but I enjoyed it. It was a good challenge.”

Although Cavill and Rockwell's movements had to be perfectly aligned, their appearances certainly aren't. While Wilde sports long hair and a shaggy beard, Argylle wears a green velvet suit and rocks a flat top haircut. It wasn't Cavill's choice, but he says he appreciated the change from his typical onscreen looks.

"That was actually Matthew's pitch, his signature style," Cavill says. "I wanted to have fun with it. Matthew said, 'Look, this guy's going to have a particular look and you've got to trust me.' And I did! That's the kind of thing I was looking for. I'm glad I did it."

The Apple Original Film will be released in theaters worldwide, in partnership with Universal Pictures, this Feb. 2, before streaming globally on Apple TV+.

Argylle director Matthew Vaughn wants the film to have two sequels

They will be based on forthcoming novels by Elly. And while this movie was his own meta-mischief take on the material, the next ones will cleave closer to the books. "Book one is about: how did Argylle become a spy? That will be the next film. And then Argylle 2 is – I don’t want to give it all away, but there’s the young Argylle, and that becomes Henry, because Henry loves the idea of doing a proper Argylle movie as well."

"I think it’s a fun character," Cavill says, when Total Film asks if he'd be up for revisiting Agent Argylle in a future film. "I mean, it depends on where we go with it, really, as with anything. I have a great relationship with Matthew, so that would be the hard part out of the way. The next bit is just building a story. As long as the story is good, and the character has a place to go, and it fits in with everything else that I’m trying to build and do, then great."

Howard is on board for further movies, should Elly be needed. "Oh, absolutely," she starts, but won’t say a word more for fear of spoilers. If you want to find out, you’ll need to support Argylle in theaters.

"Everybody complains there’s not enough original stuff, but it’s because they don’t go see it," says Vaughn. "People have got to buy tickets first, or there won’t be f*cking anything."

Argylle opens in cinemas on February 2, 2024. And you can read more about it and a whole lot else besides in the new issue of Total Film when it hits shelves and digital newsstands on Thursday, January 4.

The One Show viewers upset as Hollywood star pulls out of interview last minute

The One Show viewers were left disappointed when they tuned in for Tuesday night’s episode.

Henry Cavill fans were expecting to see him sitting on the sofa, next to John Cena, to promote their new movie, Argylle.

But when Tuesday night’s show came, it was only John and Matthew on the sofa.

Addressing the elephant in the room, the director also spilled the beans on who exactly gave Henry the lurgy.

When asked by host Ronan Keating, ‘Who is Argylle?’, he replied: ‘Argylle is a super-spy, he should be here.

‘Henry Cavill, who apologises, he couldn’t make it.’

On how he put his foot down, Matthew added: ‘I wouldn’t let him come. He was that sick and he was gonna come, so you can shoot me because he really wanted to be here.’

Matthew then revealed that it was his co-star Sam Rockwell who ‘got Henry sick’ by ‘giving him an awful cold.’

His comments were met with sympathy from the hosts and other guests, while viewers took to social media to express their sadness.

Filmmaker Matthew was recently forced to publicly debunk the conspiracy theory that Taylor penned the novel from which his new star-studded spy film has been adapted.

Despite Swifties being convinced of the Grammy winner’s involvement, Matthew has assured she ‘definitely didn’t write the book’.

Speaking about the ‘conspiracy theory’, he told Rolling Stone UK: ‘I’m not a big internet guy, and it was actually my daughter who came up to me — this is the power of celebrity and the internet — and said, “You never told me Taylor wrote the book”.’

‘And I’m looking at her going, “What are you talking about Taylor Swift wrote the book? She didn’t write the book”.

‘And I was laughing because I was like, “It’s not true! She didn’t write the book!” But my daughter was convinced of it.’
