I'm just making my way through these, having never seen this classic series before, and it's pretty funny how the issues joked about back here in the early '60s are, for the most part, the same things we worry about now over 50 years later.
However, as an historical piece, this episode is quite an eye opener. This guy, with quite the dashing moustache, is introduced as a single young bachelor who's moved into the suburbs and is living on his own - much to the Petrie's bemusement. What's going on they wonder - especially after setting him up with a couple of dates with Sally and Laura's cousin, and he doesn't call either of them back...What's the matter with these lovely ladies?!!
Now, watching this here in 2017, I'm thinking - what's the reveal here going to be? Surely 1963 isn't going to introduce this chap as their new gay neighbour (in fact "not that there's anything wrong with that", I think we're past the point a contemporary comedy would make such a "joke"). So I watched on in fascinated horror as the reveal is made - he's a wife beater and his psychiatrist has advised him not to do second dates as that is when he's likely to start beating women 😂
Unbelievably the episodes then ends with Rob and Laura making light of the whole situation by play-fightingly beating each other up!
Very strange historical viewing 😕
