Discuss Star Trek

TOS for its time was great and started trek but since then we had 3 shows (Tng, DS9, voy) and Enterprise. Even as a older guy who grew up with TOS when I think trek I think of TNG era but even tng seems a bit dated compared to DS9 and voy. DS9 is my favorite. Its to late now but the new trek should have been made 20 years after DS9. With tng era we have 3 shows almost 20 years and hundreds of shows developing trek background and cannon that should be repected.

And yet here you are, posting on a TOS board. TOS has some kind of magic about it that is missing in other incarnations.

Sukhisoo: > TOS has some kind of magic about it that is missing in other incarnations.

I agree with you on that Sukhisoo.

Ray, I don't disrespect the other shows - well, maybe I disrespect "Enterprise" a little - but my loyalty and affection will always be to TOS.

Maybe because it was such a history-making “enterprise"? sunglasses

Anyway...

8 Ways the Original ‘Star Trek’ Made History

The cult-classic sci-fi series made an enduring cultural impact way beyond the world of television.

  1. A veteran of World War II, Gene Roddenberry created a show about fighting another world war—this time in space.
  2. The show’s multicultural, multiracial cast put it well ahead of its time.
  3. The original 'Star Trek' referred repeatedly to the ongoing, escalating conflict in Vietnam.
  4. It offered a positive vision for the future in the midst of Cold War tensions.
  5. It was the beneficiary of one of the most successful fan-organized letter-writing campaigns in TV history.
  6. The show featured one of the first interracial kisses on TV.
  7. It enjoyed record-breaking success in syndication post-cancellation.
  8. Thanks to 'Star Trek' fans, America’s first space shuttle orbiter was christened Enterprise.

If I were going to add a 9th to the list, it would be: Because there have been so many imitators over the years to help keep it continuously fresh in our mind.

Finally...

When I think of TOS, compared to all the others, I'm reminded of Whitney Houston's song: “One Moment In Time”. Who knows; if TOS had come along earlier/come along later--when the world was facing a different-set-of-problems....

This post has rekindled my interest in TOS. Thanks to the OP for keeping the flame burning for this wonderful show.

@FormerlyKnownAs: That was a terrific post you made about The History Channel's "8 Ways The Original Star Trek Made History" list. On which History Channel series was that shown?

I copied it: From the “HISTORY" Channel page…

But, the 10-Episode Docuseries premiered on “HISTORY” November 5, 2021. The title: “Center Seat: 55 Years of Star Trek”.

No doubt, it’s still out there to be had…$omewhere.

Speaking of the continued popularity of TOS…

Note to members of the "Enough-Is-Enough" faction: --Gird your loins.

The countdown toward the 60th Anniversary of the show's premiere soon will be upon us.

Probably the only way to NOT hear anything about the show, its peoples, its enduring legacy, and its worldwide impact is to completely “disconnect”.

Of course...

There IS always this!

@FormerlyKnownAs: I'm getting ready to watch the last 2 episodes of Strange New Worlds season one, and the first 3 episodes of season 2. However, I am still very annoyed about Jim Kirk being on the show. This series is about PIKE'S Enterprise, not Kirk's Enterprise. I thought that it was great to have Kirk's older brother Sam Kirk as a recurring character on the Enterprise, but this time Paramount Plus has gone too far!

You'd think if Kirk's brother had served with Pike, Kirk would have mentioned it sometime. Such as when they went to see the injured Pike in part 1 of "Menagerie" and Kirk mentioned how long Spock had served with him. "Oh, and my brother George too!"

Piffle.
