Discuss Star Trek

It always seemed odd to me that they didn't seem to recognize Khan earlier, when they knew his name and were apparently rather familiar already with his history on Earth, as revealed in the Briefing Room discussion between Kirk, McCoy, Spock, and Scotty.

Ah, well. Because Plot, Because Drama...

Well, in NuTrek that wouldn't be a problem. NuSpock works with La'an, a descendant of Khan, and Captain Kirk will 'know' her. When Khan appears, it will be like a family reunion. wink

Thank the Great Bird of the Galaxy, I'm not watching any of that.

Yes, I suppose NuTrek doesn't have THAT problem. It just has EVERY OTHER problem.

Well... if, say, Eric the Red was somehow frozen but not dead and we revived him tomorrow, would anyone know he was actually Eric the Red?

Maybe. But they seemed to know more about Khan than anyone I know of, knows about Eric the Red.

LT.McGiver was a historian of the 20th century, she should have recognised Khan when he started to revive on the Botany Bay. She was mesmerised just looking at his face, odd she didn't make the connection.

That might be to be expected, although remember that according to the official histories, they were all supposed to be dead.

And while on the Botany Bay, they didn't know his name. But once he said "Khan" the mystery should have been over.

I thought Khan's body (along with about 80 of his most trusted soldiers) was reported as missing /disappeared at the time. And seeing they were highly intelligent, it would have been more plausible for the other factions to think Khan and some of his men had escaped on a spaceship.

Going back to McGiver......she identified him from northern India and as a Sikh. She should have definitely recognized his face ...we would recognize Giulio Cesare, Napoleon. Genghis Khan and we are not historians.

by me: She was mesmerized just looking at his face, odd she didn't make the connection.

by NeoLosman:

It was established at the outset that Khan exerted a powerful hold on the fairer sex. Clearly, McGiver was no different. She became so fixated on making herself an attractive candidate for Khan injecting her with his space seed, all thoughts of warning the crew of The Enterprise of just how dangerous an enemy he was evaporated from her mind

So you are suggesting that McGiver did recognize Khan but decided in a heart's beat that she wanted a baby from Khan hence she didn't inform Kirk of Khan's identity while they were still on Botany Bay and Khan was still "asleep"?

That wasn't known in advance, that's something that Spock figured out from his own detailed research. The official story from the time was that the "Supermen" were all caught/captured/killed.

SPOCK: I have collected some names and made some counts. By my estimate, there were some eighty or ninety of these young supermen unaccounted for when they were finally defeated.

KIRK: That fact isn't in the history texts.

SPOCK: Would you reveal to war-weary populations that some eighty Napoleons might still be alive?

by NeoLosman :

Dunno that her rational mind was functioning well enough by then to actually formulate a coherent thought like "I want to have Khan's baby". I do believe that she'd become so enraptured that her feral instincts were uncontrollably inflamed, so much so that all she was thinking was "Dude, inject me with your space seed!!!"

Thanks NeoLosman I needed a laugh ..been struggling with an avast subscription all day yesterday and this morning early ..I was in tears .. couldn't play videos anymore on PC.

Anyways, reading your reply had me in stitches. sweat_smile

@Okay I understand .. McGiver still should have said: Heck the guy looks like Khan the Dictator.

Later, Kirk actually mentions that Botany Bay was a penal colony and suggests maybe they were prisoners ...but Spock says that there would have been many other easier ways to dispose of them.... why excluded that these men could have escaped and were on the run?

And what about when Bones noted that Khan's heart valve action had twice the power of a normal human being. And the trio discuss the Eugenics War and mention the improved breed of humans.

And to top it off, later, Kirk speaks to Khan ......he is very vague revealing only his name (which doesn't even ring a bell )and what does Kirk do: Allows him to vision the technical manual of the Enterprise on the computer.

This story is full of potholes.

Sure, but I was focusing on just the one.

Regarding the tech manuals etc, they were over-confident, and didn't expect McGivers to help him and to free the others.

Khan is a pretty common Indian name

But maybe not so common during the Eugenics Wars? They already basically knew that he was one of the "supermen." And how many other Khans were they likely to find in deep space?
