Alternating with scenes of trench warfare and intimate glimpses of European royalty at home, and scenes of conflict at sea combined with sequences of films from the secret archives of many of the involved nations.

Govori o na novo rekrutiranem 17-letnem vojaku Paulu, ki se je prostovoljno javil za boj, saj je želel svoji družini dokazati, da lahko preživi karkoli. Toda grozote I. svetovne vojne so tudi njega ujele povsem nepripravljenega. Večina dogajanja je strnjena v zadnje 3 dni prve svetovne vojne med 8. in 11. novembrom. V filmu je osrednji lik še ne polnoletni mladenič Paul Baumer (Felix Kammerer), ki se takoj po končani srednji šoli s še dvema sošolcema sredi velike vojne prostovoljno javi v nemško vojsko. Dobi novo uniformo, vsaj zdi se tako, ves vzhičen razmišlja o zavzetju Pariza in že prvi dan izkusi grozote vojne v jarku, ko granata zadane njegovo zaklonišče in na kose razcefra njegovega sošolca. Vse je v filmu zelo nazorno prikazano in gledalcu pusti, da do potankosti začuti nemoč in obup vojakov, ki vedo, da bodo umrli, le še tega ne, kdaj in kako.
