Jednou z posledných skupín, ktorá ešte bojovala za svoju slobodu a svoje práva, boli Apači pod vedením náčelníka Geronima. Roku 1886 však aj Geronimovi verní zložili zbrane a boli odoslaní na Floridu, aby nemohli iniciovať ďalšie nepokoje v apačskej rezervácii v San Carlos. Cestou sa ale jednému z nich - Massaiovi podarilo z vlaku utiecť. Vrátil sa do Arizony a po ceste sa niečomu priučil. Stretol sa s indiánmi kmeňa Čerokí, ktorí žili s bielymi v mieri a ako rovní s rovnými. Po návrate do San Carlos bol ale opäť zadržaný. Pochopil, že sa s nimi nedohovorí a znova utiekol. Tentokrát s ním ušla aj dcéra náčelníka Santosa. Ich túžbe žiť voľne sa ale do cesty postavila jedna veľká prekážka - oddiel prenasledovateľov, ktorí chcú dopadnúť posledného slobodného Apača...
