I like the references to the different genres within horror. The items in the basement determine what monster is summoned(and we get to see a lot of them unleashed later in the movie) and the betting board is a lot of fun to look at too. This is a really cool list, though a lot of it is speculation on the contributors part: http://thecabininthewoods.wikia.com/wiki/Monster_Items

Yeah, it was a fun movie. Very meta, just like Scream, Especially enjoyable for fans of the genre with a lot of in-jokes. At the end, however, it derailed a bit too much for my taste.

Admittedly, when I first saw the end, I was somewhat skeptic, but later in the day, I realized that it actually was the best ending possible versus another. All in all, I enjoyed this movie a lot!

I agree with cjn, I originally thought the ending was sorta stupid (and by ending, I don't mean the basement but the very ending, including last shot). Now, I think it is brilliant because of the meaning behind it!

Solid film... i liked that it was as much an homage to those older movies as it was poking fun at them... shows that the filmmakers "get it" and werent just deconstructing the genre in a nerdy way...

That's Joss Whedon for you. I was happy to see he hasn't forgot his roots and put an old one in the movie. A nice treat for Buffy fans
