In this cynical comedy, an renowned, out-of-work, unpublished “underground” writer from formerly Communist Poland is driven to unusually desperate measures in order to get his work published. Stan has been living in the attic apartment of his ex-wife’s home, which he shares with a journalist friend. One day, he has an accident which convinces his ex-wife and her current husband that he's suicidal, and they hastily contact a media representative to see if some sort of publicity can't be arranged so that Stan’s work can be published and they can benefit, if not from the money, then from their association with him. The organization they contact says that they will be happy to publish his writings, if he will commit suicide live, on television, in St. Peter’s square, while the Pope is delivering an address.

Les anciens compagnons de Barbara et d'Henri, tous signataires de pétitions, se retrouvent lors d'une fête chez le couple. Parmi eux, l'ex-mari de Barbara, Stan, polonais émigré comme elle. Stan fuit vite l'ennui de cette fête d'anciens combattants et se réfugie dans la chambre de bonne délabrée de ses hôtes. En voulant changer une ampoule grillée, il provoque une véritable catastrophe et ses amis, alertés par le bruit, le retrouvent à terre entortillé dans les fils électriques. Tous croient à une tentative de suicide...

Współczesny Paryż. W eleganckim salonie odbywa się przyjęcie, wśród gości znane postaci ze środowiska lewicowych intelektualistów. Polski pisarz Stanisław - tutejszy rezydent, były mąż pani domu, Polki, opuszcza towarzystwo by w swojej służbówce zająć się pisaniem. W wyniku komediowego zbiegu okoliczności jego dwaj francuscy przyjaciele - Henri i Jacques - zyskują przekonanie, że Stan chciał popełnić samobójstwo i wpadają na pomysł, żeby na jego rozpaczy zrobić interes. Animują ekipę telewizyjną, organizują przyspieszony przekład książek Stana na francuski. Tylko jego samego trzeba pilnować, żeby nie przyszło mu do głowy zabijać się za wcześnie...
