When Peter was talking to adolescent Groot he appeared to understand him, did having his celestial DNA jump started give him this ability?

I'm still under the impression that Rocket doesn't understand Groot, either. Is it a certainty that there is a translation?

I wondered the same ... I'm assuming it's connected with what transpired in the movie

Rocket understands him in the books.

I think you could tel just from the tone of voice what message he was sending (Ha Ha)

Rocket understands him in the books.

And in the movies - that was clear in the first one

I agree. Or maybe Rocket taught Peter how to understand the "groot" language.

Will he be an adult by the next film?

Yes - Gunn explained timelines in an interview. Very very little time has passed bw Guardians 1 and 2 (hence the reason for groot still being a baby). By the time Infinity War arrives next Summer, 4 years will have passed in Guardians timeline, so by that time Groot will be much larger.

ya rumor is groot and hulk fight so he must be full grown by then
