Discuss The Second Mother

Never really understood fascination of some nations with servants, especially living in place of work. Seem in most of the Europe you just do things by yourself no matter how rich you are or hire someone do the job and leave, but not keeping employee like some dog in kennel.

Interesting movie and can only hope new Brazilian generation is like her daughter Jessica and don't give a fuck about those old horrible traditions (though at some points I understood Val, that Jessica was visiting someone's else house so there should be some respect and humbleness for others property, like you don't go to others people fridge eating their food).

Did they want to bring her son in the end permanently or just for visit? Can't really imagine Jessica studing and taking care of small child, even with her mother helping, I am afraid her school performance would suffer.

EDIT: Btw. the actor playing Val sem extremely old, I was guessing at least 50, while she is 60 something, I always thought she had daughter in young age, which is reason why she left her with some relatives, do people really do this in Brazil, have Child at 35-40 and leave it with relatives to earn more money? That sound more like some teenage mother would do leaving child with relatives and going to study or work, but not someone grown up.

Most of Europe doesn't have the same wealth inequality and obsession with status that countries who routinely have a servant class seem to do. The way growing wealth inequality is being tolerated in places like the UK I wouldn't be surprised if we see a similar culture develop in parts of Europe in the coming decades.

The film was well observed but Jessica was horribly self-centred, a hypocrite (in terms of parenting) and terribly unaware of how to conduct herself when imposing herself on another family. While Val's employers had some redeeming qualities. All in all an entertaining film, although "comedy" might be a little strong.
