Discuss Arrival

First of all I want to make clear that I loved the film and especially the twist of the flashbacks (or flashforwards as it turned out).

I wonder if it was a coincidence that the director used 2 elements of Scorsese's Shutter Island:

1) the use of the Max Richter music The Nature of Daylight

2) the use of flashbacks

In both films the two elements are used at the same time (although not everytime with the same music) and the flashbacks kind of serve the same purpose. At the end their true meaning is revealed and you don't look at the film the same way anymore.

Did anyone else catch that similarity?
