I may be hyper sensitive to it since I read the book (ok, listened to it via audible.com), but I'm surprised by how many of the younger people I know actually appreciate pop-culture stuff from the 80's. I get the movie remakes and maybe the video games, but it goes beyond that. With VR/AR coming onto the market fast, I guess I'm wondering if the future portrayed in the book (and movie soon) could actually become a reality someday. Kinda Creepy?

I usually can't stand audiobooks but the narrator really bought Ready Player One to life. Regarding your question, I would say with the rate at which we are becoming glued to our screens, it's hard not to envision a future where mankind is even more immersed into technology. We have video games, we have very rudimentary virtual reality. I'm sure, given enough time we will be walking among the Egyptian pyramids without actually setting foot outside our own homes. I'm not sure how advanced the haptic/sensory technology we saw in the book actually is at present, but again not that difficult to imagine.
