Much like the first film this is a nice moving painting with some memorable bursts of violence and sumptuous audio.
However, it’s lacking in some respects. Gone is the film noir aesthetic and Vangelis synths. The world didn’t feel truly populated and lived in - most of the film is watching Gosling’s blank face. It’s longer and actually less accessible to a mainstream audience than the, let’s be honest, dull original.
The film is mainly a philosophical journey, exploring the usual Philip K Dick ideas of reality/artificiality and identity, but this was done in a more entertaining way with Ridley’s recent Alien instalments, cack-handed though they may be. I like the restraint here, I admire its patience, but I’ll need to digest the film a couple more times before I can decide if there’s much substance in the silence.
Well done to Villeneuve for making a fitting sequel and film that isn’t afraid to agitate the attention span of a mainstream audience.

I think Ridley has been wanting to explore these ideas for years, but keeps having to struggle with the expectations of an Aliens audience and literal minded critics...
