Discuss Blade Runner 2049

I never wanted to see a BR sequel. I think the original movie is perfect as it is - one of the greatest movie ever - and didn't requre a sequel. I posted a few months ago expressing this sentiment. Anyway, the sequel was made, it exists so what did I think....?

I think the plot is interesting. The idea K may or may not be Rachael's child is quite intriguing and a decent plot for a sequel. However I don't think the overall execution of the plot was that impressive.

I didn't think the cinematography was consistent. The shots inside K's apartment and at police hq were shot with conventional lighting and it didn't seem true to the original movie's look. The shots of the city, Wallace's hq and other stuff all looked cool, great visuals, but they were in great contrast to K's apartment and the police headquarters.

I don't rate Villeneuve as an action director. He doesn't do much with a camera in terms of movement. He more or less keeps it static most of the time. Felt a bit flat.

I thought some of the dialogue was markedly inferior to the original. The dialogue in the original movie was pitch perfect - some of the dialogue in this: the scenes with K's boss berating him - reminded me of a Will Smith cop movie! The dialogue felt off. I hated the cheesy dialogue when Luv was saying "fire, fire" when the drone took out the citizens in the outer city areas.

I thought the final act kinda falls apart. When the bad guys break into Deckard's hotel they take Deckard but don't take K? They leave him on the ground but don't even try to kill him? Seemed weak/cliché screenwriting. Wallace might have wanted to dispose of K personally, so I think it would have made more sense for K to be captured along with Deckard. But nope, he's left on the floor so the resistance group can find him!

I didn't like the final action scene that much. I'm not sure how K managed to find Deckard (?) and when the crafts hit the water it looked a bit like it was shot in a sound stage and not out in the sea. Besides - if the woman was taking Deckard off-world wouldn't they be heading upwards into the sky - not across sea? Off-world is not on the sea, it's off planet!

As mentioned in another post, I think the wooden horse sub-plot would have been done better with a wooden unicorn. That would have been a stronger way to link the two movies.

The fist fight between Deckard and K was a little unnecessary and I didn't like the "cheese" dialogue when Deckard meets up with K.

I did enjoy the scenes inside the factory and the final two scenes - K in the snow - and Deckard meeting up with his daughter - did come close to the mood of the original movie.

The acting was good by the cast, Gosling the highlight. Harrison Ford is clearly getting on and seems to act more like "grumpy old man" than as Rick Deckard. But I guess Deckard may have grown into a grumpy old man! Did Ford feel like Rick Deckard? Not much.

A lot of people mentioned Ford's attire in the trailers and I thought "hey's what the big deal?" but I think they were right. It's like Ford woke up and whatever he had close by he put on and said "that's what I'm gonna wear in the movie." I guess the criticism was fair. The costume designer could have put a bit more effort into Deckard's look!

I didn't get if Deckard's daughter did or did not have a real illness? If she has an illness that means a child born of a replicant has some genetic defect but this is not explored in the movie. I assume she was told a lie and doesn't have an illness.

The end of the movie feels like the end of part 2. Wallace is still out there trying to make more replicants so I guess the intention was to make Blade Runner 3!

As a sci-fi movie it was good enough, I found it entertaining so I'll give it 7.5 out of 10 but as the long awaited Blade Runner sequel I'd rate it 5 out of 10.

It didn't have the tight plot of the original, the great atmosphere of the original. The original had a beautiful finesse which most of the movie lacked. It was just another unnecessary sequel that failed to match the brilliance of the original. It was never going to compare to the original so in that respect I wasn't too disappointed. I didn't believe this would be a masterpiece. It was a decent sci-fi film, it threw up some interesting ideas about AI vs humans - but overall it lacked the elegance of the original Blade Runner.

It would be interesting to see a different edit of BR 2, some scenes removed or cut down in length, with much of Vangelis' soundtrack added. I reckon it would feel closer to the original.
