Discuss Elle

As brilliantly funny as it is controversial, this is a powerful social commentary, as well as an exploration of sexuality, control, and the human condition. Unfortunately though, it sometimes savours the gratuitous a little more than it needs to, and it could lose some audience as a result. Many of the scenes could have been less graphic without detracting from the overarching story and comedic impact. In particular the bed scene and the repetition of the tentacle shot. There are several people I know who I think would have enjoyed it, but I couldn't really recommend it to them now.

Huh, never heard of it.

I didn't find it all that graphic - gripping, darkly funny and certainly not subtle, but plenty of films are more in your face with their sexuality. Even among Huppert's best-known roles I would say that The Piano Teacher was harder to watch at times (if equally superb).

Not that I'll be recommending it to, say, my parents! But most people who enjoy a beautifully made, compelling, grown up thriller should appreciate it and not squirm too much!

Loved Elle, though. Definitely one of last year's best.

NO IT IS NOT FUCKING FUNNY!!! It is not the LEAST realistic! The woman would be TERRIFIED ALL THE TIME!!! She would never know if she was going to be killed or mutilated the next moment! I am totally grossed out! It glamorizes totally violent awful sex that for me would hurt days and days after. AND STALKING IS FUCKING TERRIFYING! NOT FUCKING FUNNY!!!! SICK!

Never EVER think this is APPROPRIATE to do to your girlfriend/lover/obsession whatever!

Not everybody is overreacting in real life. Going on, even staying in control, is what many victims have done for centuries. So why do you get upset so much that a fictional character does not lies down crying, but takes matters into her own hands? Not helpless enough for your taste?
