I consider strange that Batman Returns received the same rating as the 1989 Batman film also directed by Burton, which was PG-13, but BR was more violent and with a darker tone than the previous film. I think Batman Returns could have perfectly received an "R" rating because of its violence and sexual tension.
Additionally, I wonder why they didn't make a special VHS release of BR with all the dark, sexual and violent stuff removed in order to give that edited version a "PG" or "PG-13" rating, and giving the finished film an "R" rating as well as labelling it as the "Director's Cut" release of Batman Returns.
Any thoughts?

No. This film is nowhere near an "R" rating, not even by today's extra-sensitive standards. The film is less violent than the original, and the sexual innuendos, while moderately frequent and sometimes rather crude, are in no way explicit enough to elicit an "R".
There was no "director's cut" because Burton, for better or worse, was pretty much given auteur control of the movie. What you see in the only finished version is the way Burton wanted it.

I think the rating is fine. Yes, it was very dark, featured some sexuality, violence and had some bloody moments, but I feel that an R is too much. For the 90's era, the PG-13 rating is good. If it was released in the 1980's, it probably would have even been rated PG to be honest. Back then, I think you could say 's***' in PG films.
