It is great if the director is inspired by WKW but to me the direction and acting in Happy Together is on another level to Moonlight, and I dont even consider HT to be close to WKW's best work (In the Mood for Love or Chungking Express).
I don't mean to be hostile, but having a glance at that video essay really brings home how scenes can superficially appear similar, but be worlds apart in their ability to convey human thought and emotion. I still find myself in quiet moments reflecting on parts of WKW's films and Tony Leung's expressions. I doubt I'll remember anything about Moonlight in the morning. Enjoyable, but utterly disposable.
