I have finally watched this film after wanting to catch it for a long time and I have to admit I feel a little let down. While it is admirably unsentimental and certainly impressive in ambition and scope, it does tend to ramble at times and my attention wandered more than once. This was clearly an extremely personal project for Kazan (it is based on his own book and recounts the life of his Greek uncle) and he mounts a handsome film with some striking visuals. Ironically, for a filmmaker renowned for drawing superb performances out of actors, the acting in this is not very impressive, including, alas, from leading man Stathis Giallelis - who is onscreen for almost every moment of the nearly three-hour movie but remains something of an inexpressive blank throughout. A mostly positive, but undeniably disappointing 6/10.
