It also got 5 stars in The Guardian and many other reviews.

And I was already really looking forward to this.

Been planning on seeing it. I hope it turns out to be good, and not another case of all the critics praising some mediocre movie.

I'm old enough to remember when Empire gave Attack of the Clones 5 stars.

lol

I can't help but wonder if Todd Phillips and Peter Farrelly are playing an elaborate in joke on Hollywood...

Alright, alright. Fair point. They even dedicated their entire magazine to it and I hated that. But in fairness every review back then gave everything Star Wars ridiculously, over the top good reviews (and still do). It's like they are all under obligation to it. But with this they're not really acting under the same kind of obligation. It's not like they all gave Batman vs Superman or Suicide Squad 5 stars.

And I would be a lot more pessimistic if it hadn't received so many glowing responses elsewhere, with words like "masterpiece" being thrown around. And it didn't look so 70s, Taxi Driver inspired.

I've had enough disappointments over the years to be cautious when watching highly praised films but the trailers for this suggest that a great film is feasible. I never got that from Attack of the Clones.

Why so serious?

Well, Todd Phillips recently said this in a recent feature about Joker:

Now, it's very hard to make comedies and to not offend people. The world has become so touchy about so many things that it's not fun to be funny any more. So it's like, 'You know what? You can have your comedies. I'm going to go over here and try this.'

So it looks like it's the whole extreme PC culture thing that is causing all these comedy directors to change tact. It wouldn't surprise me if there is more to come.

For me, it's regrettable that it would have had to come to this. I guess this extreme PC stuff is just how it's going to be.

I don't know, dude. I think the fact that Phillips said this and has had no repercussions so far (that I've heard about) is a sign of hope. If he'd have said it 6 months ago his career would probably have been severely damaged. And it wouldn't have been printed in a mainstream publication (it was in Total Film) unless said comment was being criticized.

Despite saying it, his new film has had glowing reviews and will probably be a hit. I've also heard other celebrities slowly start to be brave enough to speak their mind a bit more. I think they're now learning that nothing catastrophic is going to happen if they have a vocal opinion on such matters.

Things are slowly starting to balance out a bit and I think the conversation is going to be less one sided. I think we will get those kind of comedies again at some point.
