Prosecutor Maillard can rejoice: he has just obtained the death sentence of an accused accused of murder. It is the third head he gets at the assizes. There followed an evening of rejoicing with his wife and friends, including the prosecutor Bertolier. The latter's wife is Maillard's mistress. The lovers left alone, the condemned man, Valorin, burst into the room. He managed to escape during his transfer to the remand center. Valorin immediately recognized Bertolier's wife. And for good reason: at the time of the crime, they were together in a brothel. Stunned by the miscarriage of justice he has just committed, Maillard then tries to rehabilitate Vallorin while trying to avoid a scandal in the judiciary. He then calls Bertolier to the rescue. Valorin is opportunely killed "accidentally" and ... everything will go back to "order".

Le procureur Maillard peut se réjouir : il vient d'obtenir la condamnation à mort d'un prévenu accusé de meurtre. C'est la troisième tête qu'il obtient aux assises. Il s'ensuit une soirée de réjouissance auprès de sa femme et de ses amis, dont le procureur Bertolier. La femme de ce dernier est la maîtresse de Maillard. Les amants restés seuls, le condamné à mort, Valorin, fait irruption dans la pièce. Il a réussi à s'évader lors de son transfert vers la maison d'arrêt. Aussitôt, Valorin reconnaît la femme de Bertolier. Et pour cause : au moment du crime, ils étaient ensemble dans un hôtel de passe. Abasourdi par l'erreur judiciaire qu'il vient de commettre, Maillard tente alors de réhabiliter Vallorin tout en tentant d'éviter un scandale dans la magistrature. Il appelle alors Bertolier à la rescousse. Valorin est opportunément tué "accidentellement" et... tout rentrera dans l'"ordre".
