Gedurende de Tweede Wereldoorlog zoekt Philippe zijn toevlucht in Amerika. Hij neemt deel aan wedstrijden waarin hij Charlie Chaplin imiteert. Terwijl hij onderweg is naar huis ontmoet hij diverse personen die in deze chaotische tijden naar destructie neigen. Een van deze personen is Helen die samenleeft met haar zogenaamde hond Rosie.

While a world war rages, Philippe, a draft-dodger from Quebec, takes refuge in the American West, surviving by competing in Charlie Chaplin impersonation contests. As Philippe makes his long journey home, he encounters various characters under the sway of a destructive madness borne of the chaotic times. His voyage, both violent and fascinating, is a hallucinatory initiation to the darker side of the American dream.

Pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale, Philippe, un déserteur québécois, se réfugie dans l’Ouest américain en survivant grâce à des concours d’imitation de Charlie Chaplin. Durant son retour vers le Québec, il fait la rencontre de plusieurs individus sous l’emprise d’une folie destructrice.

Quelque part dans le monde, une guerre fait rage. Terrifié à l’idée d’être mobilisé, Philippe a fui Montréal pour se réfugier dans un Ouest américain aussi sauvage qu’hypnotisant. Il vit tant bien que mal de concours d'imitation de Charlie Chaplin. Mais la cruauté de l’humanité ne se limite pas aux champs de bataille, et Philippe ne va pas tarder à découvrir la face obscure du rêve américain.
